Hopefully this will prove to be a convenient method of handling access to the premises. Please let the Committee know if there are problems. We will revue this plan next February at the 2009 AGM unless there are problems in the meantime.
Should we have a Clydebank Sub Aqua Club logo? Some kind of logo on Sweater Shirts and T-shirts to announce who we are and where we are from. It could be a cartoon style character drawn as a diver, something to represent the past of Clydebank, an item of Diving Gear. What ever it is, it would have to be an original drawing (to avoid copyright problems). So, if you are any good at drawing or designing have a go at developing a Logo. Ideas to Iain please.
New RIB launch site in Loch Long
Iain Kennedy writes: I've found a small slip giving access to Loch Long and Loch Goil. It is situated to the south of Ardpeaton and to the north of Cove on the east shore of Loch Long on the RoseneathPeninsula. It's position by my GPS is 056° 01' 32N; 004° 51'57W. It is farther to the north than the sailing club slip and gives good access to the entrance to Loch Goil.
The slip is not substantial and there is a fairly big pothole in it. I took my car down it and onto the beach which is flat and hard with medium pebbles. Access from the road is easy provided a car spotter is deployed to the north. The slip is not as close to Loch Goil as the one at Glen Mallon, but it is in my view an easier launch. Parking will have to be on the beach so neap tides only until we have used it a few times. For launching I recommend approaching from the south and just driving down the slip before turning the car around on the beach. The Coulport Base is between the slip and Loch Goil so keep well clear and consider contacting the patrol boats on VHF channel 13.
Journey Time to Portavadie 2 hours approx, 77miles. I know it seems a long way to go but it was only another half hour beyond Strachur. The scenery from the road is quite fantastic. Views of Bute and Arran. Really pleasant.
Launch at Portavadie Jetty, Lower Loch Fyne.
Plenty of Space but would have to move the boat immediately to the Beach and park cars at the top of the Beach – NOT in the Ferry Carpark.
Launch at Beach adjacent to Portavadie Jetty.
There is again, plenty of parking space at the top of the beach. However, launching down the pebbly, stony beach would be a bit of a problem at Low Water. Best time would be half Tide for launch and recovery.
Launching at Portavadie Marina is an excellent option. The Jetty is wide and there is plenty of space for car-parking. At the moment parking is Free (March 2008) however, it is vitally important to go to the Office and ask permission. This Slip-way belongs to the Marina. It is NOT a Public Slip. We have “set-up” a cordial relationship with the Manager so we need to cultivate this relationship. The New Marina (under development), was the FabricationBasin for fitting out Oil Rigs. It was never used for this purpose. Full details with photos are available from Keith.
Plenty of potential dive sites around the islands just to the north of Portavadie, as well as heading over to Barmore Island. There are articles in Scottish Diver about this area.
Buddy Breathing Proposal and National Diving Officer
At its meeting on 23rd April, the Board discussed a paper tabled from the NDC containing proposals to remove buddy breathing ascents from the training schedule with immediate effect and to implement a mandatory requirement for all SSAC divers to carry an alternate air source.
The Board recognised and thanked the NDC for their work in preparing the paper and unanimously supported the removal of buddy breathing ascents from sport and master diver training, and the introduction of the mandatory carrying of an alternative air source.
The Board now asks the NDC for the detail on how this change will be communicated and implemented to Members through the Branches in a suitable timescale to allow effective implementation.
The role of the Directors is to make decisions and provide strategic leadership in the best interests of the Company. We do rely on the expert resource of the NDC to advise on training and technical diving matters. There are many areas of development identified in our future planning and the Board looks forward to working with the NDC to deliver these projects.
Unfortunately, Kevin Miller has intimated his resignation from the role of National Diving Officer. The Board recognises, acknowledges and thanks Kevin for his hard work over the years on the NDC and Board.
We now therefore have the role of the NDO to fill and are seeking to identify an individual with the skills and experience to take the role forward, manage the work of the NDC and work alongside the Directors to deliver the 3 year plan. Further details of the process will be issued soon, but in the meantime I ask
for a suitable volunteer to come forward for the position of Acting NDO.
We will continue with the planned NDC meeting on 6th May at 1930hrs and plan to hold this a joint Board & NDC workshop to allow the opportunity to review our projects for the year and discuss common issues. I would be grateful if you could confirm to Hazel or Sharon at HQ if you are able to attend.
I look forward to working with you all for the benefit of SSAC and its Members.
So what do you think? Are you happy with the idea of scrapping Shared ascent? Do you think it should have been retained as a good exercise in confidence building and watermanship? It's probably too late to do anything about it, but have your say!
