What gear do I need? How much does it cost?

Summary of Costs
We are often asked how much everything will cost, so to give you an idea of the approximate cost to be a diver with all your own equipment in Clydebank Sub Aqua Club please see below. However, we would never advise you to go and purchase everything at once. You need to learn what is best for you and build up your own selection of equipment over 1 or 2 years.

1st year total Membership Fees                                              £157
Complete set of Diving gear including 2 cylinders                     £1,600 - £2000
Weekly diving costs of air and travelling expenses (approx)      £15-£20
Additional 2 dive cost if we are using the Club boat                  £10

Clydebank Sub Aqua Club has equipment available for you to use. It is free of additional charge in the pool, and available for a small hire fee for use in the sea.

As already stated, don’t buy any gear before you join Clydebank Sub Aqua Club. There are plenty of Club members who will be pleased to advise you on the gear which is right for you. However, here is a guide to the gear you will eventually need and a suggested order of purchase. (July 2011)

The price range is quite considerable. The most expensive is NOT necessarily the best. This is why it is important to seek advice from other members of the Diving Club before you buy anything. Of course the list is not complete as there are many "accessories" depending on your underwater interests, eg: Photography, Archeology, Marine Biology or just observing.

Having bought the gear, if you maintain it and take care of it, then it will last for years.

There are several reputable Retailers in the Glasgow area, and of course, you could buy through the Internet. This is fine, but if local businesses are not supported they may “go-under”, then where will we buy those last minute essential “bits & pieces” which suddenly need replacing!!?? Where will we buy air fills? Some retailers are listed on the "Information" page. The good news is that most Diving Retailers will do their best to meet Internet prices and you should receive good "after sales service".

(Above)The equipment was not quite as sophisticated in 1987 as it is today. This was pre-Dive Computers, almost pre-BCD and definitely pre-Digital Cameras.

                                    Shock!!!!  ----   Horror!!!!

Notice the "horse collar" ABLJ. (What's an ABLJ!? Ask one of the "oldies")
How ever did we manage!? Very well indeed! After all ..it was "cutting edge" to us.
